Migration to UNIX Platform and SQL Relational Database
Business Challenge Intrieve, Inc., is a “Top 10” technology outsourcer delivering on-line, real time solutions for core account processing, item processing, EFT, systems integration and consulting. They also provide remote banking, ATM and debit card processing, and statement imaging. Intrieve has a separate complete backup facility as a Disaster Recovery Center. Intrieve provides data processing for core account transactions, electronic funds transfer services, and item processing for 250 customers throughout a 20 state region.
Intrieve’s legacy systems ran on six Unisys V380 Series machines soon be de-emphasized. The software was a non-database, flat file system that used on-line and batch programs. Built and modified over 20-years, Intrieve’s complex systems were highly customized. Intrieve had 744 programs and 2.5 million lines of code and data was stored in DMSII and flat files. Rather than re-engineering, Intrieve moved to; Hewlett-Packard 9000, UNIX OS, Oracle, Micro Focus COBOL 85 and simultaneously undertook date field expansion. There was no room for error because Intrieve processes millions of transactions for its customers' on-line, real time and their customers rely upon instantaneous access to information.
Solution Intrieve decided to partner with a vendor but few had the expertise to do the platform migration and date field expansion simultaneously. Progeni had automated the process, whereas others had only automated the data analysis. Progeni offered a proven, efficient date expansion methodology that met the need for aggressive timelines. Most importantly, the results needed to be transparent to Intrieve's customers and Progeni had a proven track record in this field.
Intrieve's existing DMSII and flat files were transformed and redesigned to take full advantage of an Oracle SQL, RDMS format. Progeni used the Internet to perform code transformation in its software factory, which facilitates rapid code transformation within budget.
Unique tailoring for the Intrieve project included:
- The setting up of a batch system that could mass generate a set of application specifications. This was necessary to accommodate Intrieve’s requests for custom verb changes.
- The creation of dump/load programs to migrate a small volume of data from the Unisys DMSII database to the new Oracle database.
Mr.John Kuntz, Intrieve President noted, “When our staff hit a brick wall (which is inevitable at some stage of any large project), Progeni was there to help us through. With each and every issue, we worked together as partners to resolve and accomplish all that was required. I would be pleased to act as a reference for Progeni due to the standard of the work they did for us. I am extremely impressed with the quality of their staff, the intelligence level of their shop, and the fact that the automated tools helped us to accomplish a tremendous amount in a compressed time frame.”
In true Progeni tradition, the project was completed within budget and within the timeline of less than 15 months.
